Città della Musica
Feasibility Report
Venezia
The study concerning the restoration and adaptation of the complex of buildings now referred to as the “City of Music” for Teatro La Fenice aims to create a new cultural, artistic, and production hub capable of optimizing the different phases involved in the realization of theatrical productions: the construction, storage, handling, and transport of stage sets, as well as choir rehearsals and stage rehearsals. The project seeks to place all stages of the creative process in close proximity, while opening them to the city and the community. The proposal envisions a building typology in which spaces accessible to the public – dedicated to activities, events, and workshops – coexist synergistically with spaces devoted to the production and storage of stage materials. Following the identification and further development of different usage scenarios, the selected solution proposes the subdivision of the existing buildings into three macro-areas with functions that are mutually related and intrinsically connected. In the east wing of Building A, the ground floor will accommodate the visitor reception area, including the reception desk, foyer, cloakroom, public restrooms, a bar/cafeteria space, and a first storage area for stage materials. On the first floor, an additional storage area for stage materials is planned, together with two large rehearsal rooms for the choir (each accommodating up to 40 people) with their dedicated services, as well as public restrooms. On the second floor, a large rehearsal hall with 200 seats is planned; this space can also be divided into two separate rooms through movable partition systems. The upper slab and lantern will be dedicated to technical rooms. In the west wing of the same building, meeting rooms and staff offices will be located on the ground floor facing the square. The remaining surfaces, on all floors, will be organized as storage areas for stage materials and stage sets. Building B, smaller in size and facing the public street, will house the scenography and carpentry workshops as well as the metalworking workshop, together with staff changing rooms and sanitary facilities. The proposal also considers the possibility of a protected route open to visitors to observe the workshops, designed so as not to interfere with ongoing activities. Finally, the restoration and adaptive reuse proposal outlines a coherent strategy for the completion and reorganization of the outdoor spaces included within the project area.
