Palazzo Contarini Correr

Restoration with transformation of the intended uses of Palazzo Contarini Correr

Venezia

Palazzo Contarini Correr is located in Venice in the Sestiere di Cannaregio near the church of Santa Fosca. The main façade facing Strada Nuova is characterised by a Gothic style façade, with fine ornamental details, especially on the main floor, which allow us to date it to around the first half of the 15th century, when it was owned by the Contarini family.

The palace presents a marked discontinuity in the façade, which allows us to identify the division into two parts, on the Rio della Maddalena, organised on four floors in one portion and three floors with a mezzanine in the other portion. On calle Correr we find an elevation of secondary importance.

The palazzo has two internal courtyards. A smaller courtyard is located in the Gothic building that is the object of intervention, while a larger one, currently belonging to another property, is located in the area connecting the Gothic building that is the object of intervention and the 18th-century expansion building. A cylindrical volume containing the bifold staircase that connects the various floors is currently in disuse and very dilapidated.

The managers of the Real Estate Development Fund, who are managing the palazzo, have planned to convert the building into a 4-star superior hotel with the construction of at least 30 rooms.

The project, while respecting the context, characterised by important decorated rooms, develops specific solutions related to the new functions with a reversible and contemporary character in clear distinction with the historical environments of the palace, pursuing a delicate balance between the needs of introducing new functions and the needs of historical preservation of the testimonies.
